Job: Sr. Network Engineer
Reports to: Director, Network Operations
Responsibilities:
1. Architect, document deploy and maintain a multi-data center network infrastructure in support of enterprise hosting operations for customers requiring high uptime, and rapid disaster recovery capability.
2. Architect, document, deploy and maintain a IPSEC based environment of L2L tunnels and transport connections.
3. Architect, document, deploy and maintain stateful packet inspection firewalls.
4. Administer and troubleshoot a multi-million node IPV6 network environment in a multi-customer, multiple-geography, multiple physical layer WAN backhaul to distributed wireless mesh network using proprietary routing protocols and network management tools in support of a hosted operations environment.
5. Architect, document, deploy and maintain a Layer 2 and Layer 3 dynamically routed, highly available and fault tolerant network
6. Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior, intermediate, and senior members of the technology staff, assisting them in their technical and professional development.
7. Develop procurement plans and assist in the development of an annual budget for the Network Operations organization.
8. Qualify, troubleshoot, and verify vendor claims regarding new routing, switching, and security hardware and software in preparation for deployment in our production environment.
9. Engage the Engineering organization and assist teams responsible for firmware and routing protocols in designing operational and security elements into our broadly deployed networking product. Provide feedback on technologies and toolsets using engineer provided as well as independently developed procedures and systems.
10. Act as escalation point for the Silver Spring Networks 24/7 Network Operations Center (NOC) for all network and security related incidents; on-call pager duty is required for this role.
Qualifications:
Degree from a recognized college or university, with a bachelors degree in computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, or a related field. Qualifying work experience and/or technical certification (i.e. CCNP/CCSP) may substitute for the required education
Six or more years experience in network communications.
Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to remain composed and professional in stressful, high pressure situations.
Experience in the architecture, provisioning, deployment and maintenance of a multi-site hosting infrastructure, including transit and/or intra-site circuits.
Ability to function as the topmost point of technical escalation in high-pressure, mission critical production network environment.
Basic technical competence:
o BGP and other technologies related to Internet transit.
o Network management, including monitoring, capacity, performance, and service level reporting.
o Wide area network technologies, such as ISDN, Frame Relay, T1, DS3, OC3/OC12, and other carrier-based services including mobile data services like EVDO, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA and 1xRTT
o Experience with Ethernet-based networks, ability to debug/troubleshoot issues at the MAC layer using packet capture/sniffer tools.
o Solid grasp of IPSEC framework and implementation (ESP, AH, IKE)
o Solid understanding and practical use of TCP/IP and related Internet protocols. IPv6 experience a plus.
o Network monitoring tools and techniques, intrusion detection systems, switches, routers, firewalls, and IP addressing. IPv6 experience is a plus.
o Experience with wireless/RF networking technologies is desirable.
o Strong familiarity with UNIX-based operating systems and CLI environments; shell/perl scripting capabilities are highly desirable
Experience working on Cisco router/switch/firewall platformsCisco IOS installation using TFTP from console and from ROMMON.
OSPF routing.
HSRP and VRRP knowledge.
DSL WIC configuration, installation and maintenance knowledge on Cisco devices.
T1 circuits in Point to Point and bonded configuration, Multilink PPP and with per packet based load sharing
Single and Dual Serial WIC configuration, installation and maintenance on Cisco devices.
Stateful firewall filtering and inspection, stateless firewall,
Knowledge of PIX firewall rules, static and dynamic NAT configuration.
Knowledge of basic, extended and named IOS Access lists.
