As a UNIX Systems Engineer in the Technical Operations organization, the ideal candidate will join the team responsible for the entire management lifecycle of the systems and storage supporting the Salesforce.com on-demand CRM service with focus on the QA/Dev and Internal Systems. This includes, but is not limited to: system capacity (CPU/memory) planning, systems design and integration, hardware / software / OS maintenance for both servers and storage systems, ongoing systems configuration management, and ownership of all systems and storage in all data center facilities in which Technical Operations maintains a presence.
Responsibilities: Key responsibilities for the UNIX Systems Engineer position include:
- identification and resolution of hardware, software, or architectural issues in any of the servers and storage systems supporting the salesforce.com Internal Systems instances and/or hosts, especially those that directly impact the Development, QA and Data Warehouse services
- analyzing systems errors or anomalies, as well as specific server / storage performance issues and/or error messages, in order to ensure maximum uptime and service quality and assess trends that may ultimately result in degradation of service
- formulating and implementing monitoring, policies, procedures and standards relating to server and storage management
- participation in a 24x7 on-call rotation on a periodic basis;
- some travel may be required.
Required Skills/Experience: - BS/BA degree, or equivalent work experience
- 3 - 5 years Solaris/ Linux Administration experience, 2+ years in a 24x7x365 high-volume environment
- Experience with high availability systems and storage solutions / architectures (SunCluster, Veritas Cluster)
- Working knowledge of Veritas Volume Manager
- Experience with high-end SAN storage (HDS, EMC, Brocade, McDATA) solutions and storage multi-pathing (MPxIO, DMP)
- Experience with at least one of the major backup packages (Veritas NetBackup)
- Experience restoring partial or full site outages from redundant sites and / or tape (disaster recovery)
- Candidate MUST have extensive experience working in structured change management processes for highly available enterprise database systems
- Experience building and configuring major Internet host/network services including but not limited to: Web (http, SSL, etc.), Mail (sendmail, etc.), DNS, NFS, NIS/NIS+, databases (Oracle, etc.) and Java
- Hardware training and/or certification in systems and storage management (Sun Microsystems, Hitachi Storage Solutions, Solaris, Red Hat Linux, etc.)
- Functional working knowledge of SQL
- Perl and/or shell scripting
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills conducive to team development
Desired Skills: - Experience working in high-volume, terabyte-sized Oracle OLTP environment preferred
- Experience with storage-specific technologies (HDS ShadowImage, TrueCopy, TimeFinder) preferred
- Project management
- Solid networking experience - TCP/IP, administration of networking hardware (Cisco, Foundry, etc.), load balancing - considered a plus
- Firewall/security experience - access control list management, secure remote access management practices, IDS, etc. - considered a plus
- Previous experience managing e-commerce sites and/or on-demand services
